I have no serious problem with paying for the Windows version. As a long-time Mac (started with beta) and iPhone (again beta) tester I have grown very fond of 1Password. It displaced my SplashID almost entirely (I still have some archival content there).

I would suggest you modify your licensing page from "we license the user not the computer". In its simplest terms I, as a Mac 1P owner, read that as being entitled to a free Win version as I am still the only user. If you intend me to pay for the Windows version then you'll have to state single user on a given platform.

Where your Mac/Win policy gives me heartburn is that not only am I a single user but I also may be running the software on a single computer via Bootcamp. Maybe with Parallels I can run the Mac version but once booted to Bootcamp that's impossible. I realize the blurring of lines that Mac OSX accomplishes must create a real headache for you guys and I believe in fair compensation for your efforts. That is why I am heading to the store to buy the Windows version right now.

Change your licensing policy page before the onslaught begins.

And it would be really beneficial to myself and others if the Family pack was cross-platform as many households are.

My views are not representative of Agile since I don't work for them. My interpretation of licensed to "you" is for the product. Since I purchased 1Password for the Mac then that's what the license covers. 1Password for Windows is an entirely different products and platform as such I didn't expect it to be covered under the current license for 1Password Mac. Having the 50% off promo running now made it even easier to accept, plus the $2.50 discount for each post that much sweeter. Well worth the investment to have a single product for all my passwords is "PRICELESS". <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I didn't find that option in the preferences at the usual places.
Vanish, 1Password for Windows does not normally start when you start Windows (though I'm sure there are tools in Windows for making that happen, if you like).

Ae you actually asking whether there's a way to cause that behavior? If so, I don't know of one built in to 1Password (which is why there's no option to prevent it).
  • You are right!

I misunderstood it i guess. 1password adds a module in IE. And by that grabs account and log in information.

I thought it would run outside.

I just did not see the additional button, because it was hidden behind an arrow pointing to additional menu items.

You probably could change this to show the 1password browser integration a bit more directly?

Precisely why I suggested they change the wording regarding their license. Follow this link and read the first sentence. The reference to non-computer specific license, to me, implies non-OS specificity as well.

Agree with the first part of it being on “per computer” basis".

But the second part makes it clear that it's for a Mac not a PC.
A single-user license allows you to install and use 1Password on as many Macs as you own.
Also agree that the wording needs to be a little more defined then how it reads now. Perhaps...

...as many Mac as you own under the native OS and not via BootCamp or other type of PC emulation.

Thank you for contacting Agile Web Solutions. This special offer is extended to active forum participants who have helped us get 1Password for Windows ready for production over the past months. I see that your messages in the beta for Windows forum were posted after Dave's message was posted on 8th August. I'm sorry, but you do not qualify for this offer.

Please let us know if we can help you with anything else.

Just wanted to say thanks for the special discount for beta forum posters (which I've just taken advantage of).

It's something you didn't have to do, but reminds me why Agile are such a great company, who care about their customers and software. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_yes.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(y)' />

Looking forward to the final version when it's released. (And getting the iPad version when I buy an iPad next year).
  •
We decided to simplify things and offer 1Password for Windows for half price to everyone during the beta period. We could have spent a few days adding a special process for existing paid users but decided in the end we'd rather focus on new features instead.
Just to make sure I understand properly: I've bought 1Password 2, 3, and Pro, but if I want any kind of discount on 1Password for Windows I need to buy the beta version. Correct?

It may be a fine distinction but, technically, the beta software is still free. You'd be purchasing an early registration of the non-beta software. At this time, the half-price offer is the discount on early registration of 1Password for Windows.

I've heard there will be some accommodation, after the beta period, for people who also have licenses for 1Password on the Mac; but no details are available yet, to my knowledge.

Do we know if details will be available before the early registration offer ends? I'd hate to sit around waiting for details, find out my discount isn't as good as the early registration one, and then find out the early registration discount is no longer available.

It's your money, of course, but (having been a 1Password customer before joining the team) my choice would be to go with the bird in the hand, rather than waiting to see how many might be in the bush. What with global warming, you can't be sure the bush will even be there, the next time you check.

Scott, I'm so sorry my lame attempt at humor came across wrong! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_doh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(doh)' /> Agile's treatment of me as a repeat customer is one of the main reasons I wanted to join the team.

I was trying to share how I'd think of it (as the regular paying customer I was for so long before joining the support team) by saying that, if it were me deciding how to spend my own money, I'd go for the 50% discount, because it's a really good deal. (Again, I've heard no details about what might eventually be offered.)

The global warming joke was just that—utterly unrelated to the company and certainly not a comment on its reliability or attitude.

I sincerely apologize if I gave offense or damaged your opinion of us. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Think less of me, not the company.

Hehe no worries. I'll hold my opinion in check until I see whether Agile offers me a better discount as any pre-orderer "off the street" or as a multiple repeat customer.

Just became a "pre-release, half price paying customer" with a family pack. As we are a PC only (with 2 iPhone 4s between us) I don't see a problem with cross-platform licensing. The purchase went smoothly though as someone in the thread posted earlier, I entered my AMEX data and was then transferred to the PayPal site. A little confusing and did not give me the warm fuzzies, but after that everything went smoothly.

My first question: Did I buy "just" the Windows side software or do I get a discount on the iPhone version as well? Just asking so I don't pay for something that I (may) have already paid for.

Second question concerning synching between 5 different computers: I synch with 3 Windows (2 32 bit XP and one 64 bit Win 7) boxes and my spousal equivalent syncs with 2 Windows (1 XP and 1 64 bit Win 7) boxes. We have a family license to MobileMe that's working as far as our Outlook / iPhone contacts & calendar functions. What is the best way to insure that we also synch 1Password - without paying for another subscription service?

Thanks for the advice and the ability to pay half for a pre-release license. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It's a reasonable question, but we don't have any way of "bundling" with the iPhone apps, as the iTunes App Store is run (and payments are handled) exclusively by Apple.

Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) offers a quite sufficient amount of storage space for free and is the only sync solution for 1Password for Windows, at this time.

Please see the user's guide (http://help.agile.ws/1Password_Windows/index.html) for instructions on setting up Dropbox sync'ing for use with 1Password for Windows.

    1Password, 3Licenses

    Not impressed...
Just a couple of examples from my own experience:

I've used the Carbonite backup service on my PC for some years. When they came out with a Mac version in 2009, they charged me full price for a license, even though I had participated actively in the beta program for a few months before the final release.

I have Windows XP installed in several virtual machines, and Microsoft made me pay full retail price for each installation.
I still think the half-price offer is a pretty great introductory price for 1Password for Windows, not to mention the effectively full refund for folks who had been participating in the beta program.
...but love your 1Password product so I would have to bite the bullet
j33per, we are truly grateful for your faith and support. Without our awesome customers, it would not have been possible for us to devote the many months' effort required to develop 1Password for Windows.

    Thank you!
  • As a current customer with multiple licenses for 1Password Mac and iPhone, I honestly find it unreasonable and sh!*#y that you aren't simply making the Windows release free for people like me. To quote your own FAQ:
1Password is licensed on a “per person” basis, not a “per computer” basis. A single-user license allows you to install and use 1Password on as many Macs as you own. We like to call this our Sane Licensing Model™, as there is only one of you so you should only need one license for all your machines!
I understand that a Windows version is a wholly separate program, like those for the iOS platforms, with development and maintenance costs, but with the Dropbox integration it really is becoming a ubiquitous application (can we expect a web version at some point?). I just installed the Android version which I was so excited about, but I guess now I should prepare to pony up for that too as soon the beta label comes off. The message you're sending is that for every new platform comes a new expense, even for loyal customers who've paid for upgrades and family packs etc.

Pandora doesn't charge me extra to listen to it on my phone (yes I am a paying Pandora customer - yearly). Evernote doesn't charge me extra to take notes on my Windows machine at work. You know who does charge me separately for my different platforms? Adobe for Photoshop. Microsoft for Office. As DBrown pointed out, this is a common experience, but just because other companies do it doesn't make it a good reason.

I've loved using your software for years now. I've been an evangelist, and a happy beta tester (I haven't posted anything for the Windows version because, well, I honestly haven't had any problems with it). But when it comes to licensing, if you're going to treat your customers like M$, then unlike j33per I'm not biting any more bullets.
  • First off love the product.

Second off, sorry to be thick, but what exactly am I buying here -

Am I donating cash for using the beta and once the product moves out of beta, I will need to purchase the release version?

Am I donating cash for using the beta and once the product moves out of beta, I will get a discount on the release version?

Bought version 2 for the Mac. Upgraded to Family Pack for the Mac, version 3. Bought the original iPhone version. Bought again (Pro version) for the iPad. Just bought Family Pack for Windoze, though I only have two PCs and both are virtual machines running on my Macs.

I am NOT one of the everything should be free people, and that is why I purchased again. Great product, and I can finally get rid of Roboform, but please consider the whole "Family Pack" concept for being cross-platform when you get that far.

  • Love the product! Even bought the 1Password Pro app for the iPhone. I recommend the software suite to all my security-conscious friends and colleagues.

And you guys offering 1Password in the MacHeist offer contributed to my participating in that particular MacHeist even though I've already got the program because I was able to gift the license. (Love those MacHeist folks, too.)

I'd like to suggest a change in wording to reduce some confusion in your innovative licensing model. You currently have in your user guide:
1Password is licensed on a “per person” basis, not a “per computer” basis. A single-user license allows you to install and use 1Password on as many Macs as you own.
It might help folks to work the word platform into it:
1Password is licensed on a “per person per platform” basis, not a “per computer” basis. A single-user license allows you to install and use 1Password on as many Macs or as many PCs as you own. However, licenses to use the same user password database on both a Mac and a PC must be purchased separately.
I suspect someone else can come up with better wording to express the same idea. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Keep up the great work!

  • Nice program!

I had problems setting up the synchronization with the windows version.

Just in case someone else has the same problem, here are the steps I took to solve the sync issues I was having:

    1. delete the keychain from my dropbox.

    2. open 1Password for Windows

    3. create brand new keychain in the root of my dropbox folder

    4. add one entry (I created a login entry so I could be sure it actually sync-ed)

    5. open 1Password on the iPAD.

    6. sync

    7. re-enter master password

    8. all is well now

    9. repeat on the iPhone.

It might not have been necessary to create the keychain in the root of dropbox but it seemed less complex that way.

I think the big thing was I had the program create the keychain in the dropbox folder rather than copying it there.

I am glad I just started using this program and don't have all of the entries I have in my old password locker.
